The day Stacey Grant loses her job feels like the last day of her life. Or at least, the only life she'd ever known. For who was she if not a City high-flyer, Senior Partner at one of the top private equity firms in London? As Stacey starts to reconcile her old life with the new - one without professional achievements or meetings, but instead, long days at home with her dog and ailing mother, waiting for her successful husband to come home - she at least has The Girls to fall back on. Beth, Melissa and Gaby. The girls, now women, had been best friends from the early days of university right through their working lives, and for all the happiness and heartbreaks in between. But these career women all have personal problems of their own, and when Stacey's redundancy forces a betrayal to emerge that was supposed to remain secret, their long cherished friendships will be pushed to their limits...

City of Friends Joanna Trollope 9781509846757 Books

Usually enjoy Trollope but this book was pointless. So enigmatic were some of the characters' grudges against each other, that you simply could not get involved. Also, the children are all made to sound like brats and with totally unrealistic conversation. All in all it made for a dreary pointless story and I skipped through pages to get to the end as it is a point of honor that I start what I finish. Also, quite a few annoying typos and why would a renowned business professor enumerate her Swiss salary in US $?

City of Friends Joanna Trollope 9781509846757 Books Reviews

This novel talking about modern women balancing careers, families, meaning, life- really resonated with me. The novel is told through the lens of different women, each facing significant challenges, each of which is very real. Recommended.
I like this author who plumbs the depths of human interaction, but I'm also a fan of traditional storytelling with a beginning a middle and an end. I felt that the book stopped too soon. The denouement was too brief. I understand that life is like that, but I prefer a little more closure.
It these people are friends...the usual excellent writing from Joanna Trollope, but this quartet of supposed friends take too long to come together for each other. I wish I cared more about these women.
I'm a Joanna Trollope fan. As an American, it's fun to read about contemporary social issues from a British point of view.
This book seems to reflect the authors own age and it's particular frustrations - midcareer doubts, sandwiched between elder parents and coming of age children, and relationship surprises. The style is ultimately readable and fast paced. Of course, we do have to note that all of the problems are padded with ample funds. That even leads to a modicum of social conscien. Fun read
I love all of Joanna Trollope's books. I wish she would make a character tree on the first page. I have to keep looking back to make the connections until I get far enough into the story to keep them all straight. I give it 4 stars because I do like her writing style.
This book had interesting storylines & characters. The ongoing dilemmas between work expectations, family life, & the glass ceiling are clearly presented. I read it straight through, in a couple hours, because I couldn't put it down.
I know Joanna Trollope writes about ordinary families, their lives and their tribulations. So I should have expected what I got -- not a very exciting book. It's heavily tilted towards feminism but not aggressively so. It's the story of part of the lives of four University friends, who live in London. All four are determined career women, but not all career paths run smoothly. Trollope's characters are well drawn, and she has a pleasant flowing writing style. Trollope fans, who know her books, will already know what they are going to get. Other readers who like stories about people like themselves might like this book. Not much swearing, no graphic sex, in fact I cannot remember sex bits at all. Nice, if not 5 star standard.
